Adopt-a Highway Trash Pickup

On Saturday October 29, 2011 a group of eleven Georgia Mineral Society members went to Ball Ground Georgia to pick up trash on our section of Highway five. A few of the member were dressed in Halloween costumes. We had the Cat in the Hat, two escaped hospital patients and a beer can. Nineteen bags of trash were collected. Interesting items found a knife, two golf balls, one baseball, and a pair of eyeglasses. After collecting trash we had lunch at Peppers then went to the Cochran mine to collect tourmaline, mica, and beryl. The weather was nice we had a great time.

Directions:  Take 75 north to I 575 north.  Go 35 miles to exit 27 (Business 5) - the Howell Bridge Road/Ballground exit.  Go right to the stop sign and left on Business 5/Canton Highway.  We will meet 0.5 miles on the left at the gas station.  Please park away from the store-front.  It takes about 30 minutes from 75/575 to get to the site.

ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY OCTOBER 30, 2010
The October air felt great as ten GMS members braved the mild weather to make a mile of highway in Ballground much nicer. There wasn't as much trash to pick up at this time, but that may change as the store at our meeting site has re-opened.

GMS Trick or Trashers are Bill Waggener, Kim Cochran, Mary and Dylan Porter, Carl Ziglin, Frank Decaminada, George Libby, Tom Batcha, Terrie and Casey Sosebee, Lori and Charles Carter, Kathy and Elena Smart, Pam Martin, Ginger Peterson, William, Frances, Matthew, and Libby Fleck, Sebastien, Sandrine, Sarah, and Samuel Fuchs, and Lizabeth and Mickey McClain.
The GMS Adopt-a-Highway Trick or Trash Pickers
October 27th (2007) GMS held its increasingly popular Halloween Trick or Trash Pickup in Ballground, Georgia, along Highway 5. Her Grace Sister Mary Kim (aka Kim Cochran) and The Mad Hatter (aka Bill Waggener) led the motley crew of 24 along the one-mile stretch leaving a trail of 22 pumpkin-orange trash-filled bags. Traffic slowed to a crawl at times as drivers were doing double-takes and taking pictures of the big mustached nun, the axe victim, Gilligan and the Skipper, and the other costumed pickers. When we were finished Bill Waggener had door prizes for all, and we then had a great BBQ lunch at “Two Brothers BBQ” restaurant. Funny thing, though, none of the other patrons would sit near us! After lunch and re-energizing Farmer John (aka Charles Carter) led us on a field trip to nearby Little Garnet Hill to collect almandine garnets, and everyone collected lots of small but wellformed garnets. It was another very successful and fun GMS outing.

The most inventive costume goes to Lori Carter who was wearing a fashionable cheeseburger
hat and matching pair of dice.  The combination creates a play on words for the classic Jimmy Buffett song “Cheeseburger in paradise"
