What: Once again the NC. Mineral and Gem Festival will be held in Spruce Pine NC. This 50th,  festival will be held  August 2nd to the 5th, 2007.  Featured is a Fluorescent Mine Tour of Chalk Mountain. The cost of this tour is $15.00 a person. Everyone attending will be able to bring and fill a five-gallon bucket of Hyalite Opal during the evening trip to the mountain. This material fluoresces a bright green color.

Bring:  As mentioned a five-gallon bucket. A short wave UV flashlight may be very useful but the tour group will have some lights that everyone will be able to collect. While the tour may be cancelled due to inclement weather I have collected there with the group in the rain so protective and or warm clothing may be useful.

Sign up: This is a limited group and the chamber of commerce will have to arrange for the buses so you must sign up for the trip as soon as possible. The contact numbers are (828) 765-9033. Ask for Shelly. Payment in advance is required and must be sent to PO Box 858, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
