Ivey Farm is well known for its ample production of amethyst scepters. Over the last 30 years many fine example of scepters has come from the diggings.   Typically never small and sometimes very large .  Scepters are uncommon and very rare in Georgia  except for at this location.  Lots of clear quartz and lots of scepters!   Most all amethyst that is not scepter is euhedral or double terminated.  These are mostly big fist size or better .  A lot of the crystals are etched or have a heavy white coating but a lot are nice and some are super.  About 10 percent of the crystals are enhydro. That is to say they have a 2 phase inclusion - a liquid (water) and a gas ( co2 ). This means you can tilt the crystal and see the bubble of trapped gas move around.
COST:  $10.00 per day, per person to dig in the tailing piles.  Teenagers are charged $3. Fresh material is brought up to the tailing piles frequently!

The operator has requested that no one under 12 collect due to water and high walls in the pit.
No one will be allowed in the hole or in the ramp works leading into the hole . Also, no digging in the base pad that the pump is sitting on.

EQUIPMENT TO BRING:  You will need a rake or hoe to work the dumps and perhaps a ¼ inch screen to sift the material.  You will need a shovel if you want to dig the float.  As always, bring plenty of water to drink and do not forget something to snack on. There is no place nearby to purchase food. Sun screen , hat and bug spray may be welcome addition to you list.
