AM - Saturday, August 4, 2001
Antreville,
Abbeville County, SC
(FEE
AREA)
Children welcome.
Pets must be on a leash.
This is a fee site! The mine is
located near the little town of Antreville. We will meet Mr. Jack
Browning (owner of the mine) at Crawford's store to collect the fees.
From the store meeting place we will go on to the mine. The cost
is $10.00 for adults, $7.00 for children between the ages 6 - 12 and children
under 6 get in free. If you like, you probably can hunt on Sunday
the 5th as well.
What you can
expect to find: This is a quartz mine and there is still plenty of
Quartz to be found there mostly of the yard rock or the cabinet specimen
variety. Most common are gray, milky-smoky quartz and skeletal(secondary
growth) white quartz. Less frequent are amethyst and high-quality
smoky quartz.
Tools:
A pick, shovel, chisels, hammers (sledge and rock), prybar and buckets
would be needed if you are planning on getting serious. Don't forget
newspaper for wrapping your specimens.
Bring:
Lunch and plenty of water! Sunscreen might help too as the digging
area is mostly in the open.
Meet:
9:00 AM at Crawford's Country Store, Antreville, SC.
