An Official Field Trip of the GEORGIA MINERAL SOCIETY Saturday February 16, 2002 09:00, Central Time Site Name: Erin Road City and State: Ashland, Alabama County within State: Clay Children: Pebble Pups are always
encouraged to attend our field trips. Any age or size is welcome.
TRIP: to Erin Road, Clay county to collect garnet crystals. Trip is FREE(no fee)! Collecting: Massive almandine garnet crystals, samples will be displayed before trip. Special Conditions: None Collecting Area: The area is in the Talladega National Forest. Collecting will be along a dirt road that runs through privately managed forest land. Both the road surface itself, the banks, and the area near the road. There are other materials that can be collected in this same area. No large holes are allowed, however there are plenty of easily collected garnets. Material is “poor” quality, however can be cabbed or used for spheres and eggs. Has interesting red/orange appearance with healed fractures and inclusions. This location is in one of the gold and copper producing areas of Alabama. BRING: something to collect in, simple
digging tools. Don't forget to bring something warm to drink and
lunch.
