CARGILL PHOSPHATE MINE.

FIELD TRIP - Saturday, March 13, 2004. CARGILL PHOSPHATE MINE.
"Rockhounds/Fossil Enthusiasts". The meeting time is 9 AM. It should last until 12 or so. Bob, the Cargill ring leader and "Tour Guide", is very generous with his time and knowledgeable of the area fossils. You can find sharks teeth, shells, marine life from fish to mammals - large and small specimens from tiny teeth to whale vertebrates, sting ray, dugong, etc. Sodas are supplied but bring : Lunch, water, hat, sunscreen, buckets(s), small shovel, pick, trowel, baggies for your treasures, towel, foam knee pad for kneeling or sitting on and sunglasses, boots.

FOSSIL SHOW -  SATURDAY and SUNDAY MARCH 13 & 14, 2004. This is the annual Tampa Fossil Club Show (of which I have been a regular for several years now). I coordinated this weekend  to include the show and trip since we're already over there! A  FOSSIL DREAM COME TRUE! There will be LOTS of fossils available for sale in case you didn't find what you wanted at the dig on Saturday. Mineral specimens, jewelry and lots of other "goodies" will be there. Dr. Gordon Hubbell, world renowned prehistoric shark expert, will be giving lectures. The hours are Saturday and Sunday from 9- 5pm. You can go there after the dig or all day Sunday or BOTH! The show is about 45 minutes away from the dig.

Directions: The show is held at the Tampa Fair Grounds. Take I-60 north to I-75. Go west on I-4 to Rt. 301. Go south  on Rt. 301 to the entrance to the fairgrounds  (Expo Park) which is on the west side (right side) of Rt. 301. Follow the signs to the building for the Fossil Show. I think the cost is $3 but WELL WORTH IT ! There is a Mini-mine for kids and concession stand food available. There might be another show (computers?) at the same time next door.

ACCOMMODATIONS - the town of Bartow on I-60 and west to the Tampa area have many motels available.

The Peace River is south of the mine and is great for continued digging - especially at the De Soto County Park  west on Brownville Road and down into Arcadia where campsites are available.   LOTS of choices to see and do this weekend !! this is one you won't regret and will have fond memories!
