FIELD TRIP FOR OCTOBER 2001 ![]() |

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2001 9:00 a.m., CDT, Sylvarena, MS The Mississippi
Gem and Mineral Society(Jackson, MS) will host the October DMC/Field
Trip Committee fossil field trip to Sylvarena,
MS. Sylvarena is a very small town on Hwy. 18 between Raleigh and Bay Springs
MS. The site is a haven for
Children are permitted but should be kept under close supervision. Family pets need to be kept on a leash. There are no fees associated with this field trip. Equipment: Bring tools for shallow scraping or digging, and you may want to bring a hammer and chisel. Sometimes a good fossil is found in the hard limestone. You will need bags or buckets and don't forget something to put small fragile fossils in. Be sure to bring something to eat and drink, we will be out in the country and there are no stores nearby. Directions: We will meet at 9:00 a.m.(CDT) at Hardees Restaurant in Bay Springs. Hardees is on Hwy. 15, just south of the Intersection of Hwy 18 and Hwy 15. We will have examples of what can be found, and someone to explain the geology of the area. Accommodations: There is a Western Motel on Hwy 15 just north of the Hwy 15 and Hwy 18 Intersection. You may also find accommodations is either Forest or Newton (both on Interstate 20).
This field trip was canceled due to inclement weather preventing entry into the collecting location. The trip will be rescheduled at a future date. DMC "Field Trips are open to all members of associated clubs of the DMC program of the SFMS Field Trip Committee and to all members of SFMS member clubs who have provided their membership with SFMS liability insurance. Because of insurance requirements, members of the GENERAL PUBLIC are NOT invited on this or any DMC program field trips!" |
