FIELD TRIP #1
OCTOBER 1999
"An Official Field Trip of Cotton Indian Gem & Mineral Society, Inc. " (Host)

Mineral Collecting Site
Lexington, Georgia
Saturday, October 16th, 1999
____________________________________________________________

Fee: I am asking for a two dollar donation per person for the young man that will take his time to show us the locations and let us dig on his property.

Safety:

CHILDREN UNDER 12 years of age permitted.
Pets are allowed, but please keep them leashed.
Digging instructions and information for side collecting locations will be given at the meeting site.
Meeting Time: Saturday, October 16th , 1999

Collecting: We will be collecting clear quartz crystals, quartz clusters, quartz covered in hematite, incomplete quartz crystals similar to skeletal quartz, hematite, amethyst, agate and several other associated minerals.  There is a lot of material lying on the surface, but digging will produce the best quality.  The ground is real sandy and digging down two to four feet takes very little effort.  There are two other locations for good specimens and more clear quartz crystal points.  All the locations are within a few hundred feet off the roadway.

Tools: Geology hammer, chisel, small sledge hammer, a shovel, scratching tools, buckets or rock carrying bags.  Sifting screens, spray bottle.

Bring: Bring plenty to drink.  Dehydration when on a dig is always a problem even in cool weather.  Bring your own lunch or other snacks.  Don't forget the bug spray, sun screen, hat, gloves, sturdy shoes, 5 gallon buckets, and to protect your quartz points from breakage bring plenty of newspaper. There are no rest room facilities.

"Field Trips are open to all members of associated clubs of the DMC program of the SFMS Field Trip Committee and to all members of SFMS member clubs who have provided their membership with SFMS liability insurance. OCTOBER 1999

Fee:  FREE! - No Fee

Safety:
NO CHILDREN UNDER 12 years of age.
Pets are allowed, but please keep them leashed.
Digging on the top of the limestone pinnacles will not be allowed.  The pinnacles need to be preserved for future study by students and professional geologists.  Please do not climb the tall pinnacles; this rule is for safety.

Meeting Time:   Saturday, October 23rd, 1999

Collecting:   Barite (massive and nodules), Fluorite (purple, green and gray cubes in matrix to 1/2 inch),  Marcasite

What we’re looking for are vugs lined with fluorite crystals within the barite matrix host rock.  Most of the time you will need a rock hammer and chisel to break loose a large piece of the barite to reveal the fluorite lined vugs inside.  Sometimes a small sledge hammer will be required to bust apart larger barite boulders to get at the fluorite!

Tools:   Geology  hammer, chisel, small sledge hammer, a pry bar, scratching tools, buckets or back pack.

Bring:  Bring plenty of water.  Dehydration can be a problem even in cool weather.  Bring your own lunch or other snacks.  The nearest fast food restaurant is about 6 miles.  Don't forget the bug spray, sun screen, hat, gloves, sturdy shoes, 5 gallon buckets, and plenty of newspapers to wrap your specimens.  Bring rubber boots and a change of clothes if the ground is wet or if there is a good chance of rain.  It can get real muddy getting in and out of the mine area!  There are no rest room facilities so be prepared.
