DESCRIPTION OF SITE: Coon Creek is one of the twelve most important fossil sites in North America. The site has produced some 600 species of marine fossils, including the skeletal remains of a Mosasaur. The specimens found at the 70-million-year-old site have not undergone replacement but are as they were when they died (shell intact including the original color). The site has 5 camp-style cabins with restrooms, showers, and a large kitchen and dining hall. There are areas for tent camping and RV parking. Because this site is in a remote area, it is recommended that participants take advantage of the cabins, tent and RV areas for overnight.  Meals are available at the site.

Educational programs have been scheduled and all that is needed . .  is you!

COSTS: The site is owned and operated by the Memphis Pink Palace Museum, Memphis, TN. Fees are charged to cover the costs of the facility and staffing.

(1) SITE FEE AND RELATED PROGRAMS:  A $35.00 per person fee is charged for: 
(a) use of showers, bathrooms and dining hall;
(b) digging for fossils in the quarry;
(c) Saturday night guided-star observation with museum telescopes; and
(d) instructors/crew on property to teach, cook and clean up.

(2) MEAL FEES: A charge of $25.00 per person for the complete meal plan which includes five meals (Friday night dinner; Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner; Sunday breakfast (If you only want to eat the Saturday night dinner, it is available as a separate meal for $7.50 per person).
(a) Friday night dinner from 6-9 p.m.: A light meal for participants arriving this evening includes meat sandwiches, slaw, condiments, chips, cokes, coffee, tea and milk, fruit cup for dessert;
(b) Saturday breakfast from 7-8:30 a.m.: pancakes, eggs, bacon, toast, grits, coffee, tea, milk;
(c) Saturday lunch at noon: Soup, grilled cheese sandwiches, crackers, fruit cup, coffee, tea, milk and cokes;
(d) Saturday dinner from 6:30-8:00 p.m.: Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, slaw, 2 vegetables, rolls, banana pudding, coffee, tea, milk and cokes;
(e) Sunday breakfast from 7-8:30 a.m.: Cold cereal, milk, sweet rolls, coffee and tea.

(3) ACCOMMODATIONS FEES: A fee of $5.00 per person per night for cabins; $5.00 per night for tent or RV parking.

ROCK SWAP: Saturday evening there will be a rock swap with the group and members of the Memphis Archaeological and Geological Society (MAGS).  Bring your materials and let's trade or sell.

COON CREEK SCIENCE CENTER POLICIES:
(1) The Coon Creek Science Center is an educational facility for the study of geology, astronomy and biology.  Fossils may be excavated as part of an educational program, but the site should not be viewed as a fossil quarry.
(2) Excavation of fossils is restricted to the designated visitors' quarry area and not allowed in the creek. Visitors may walk the creek, but not dig or scratch the banks. Fossils found loose in the stream may be picked up.
(3) Participants provide their own tools (SEE TOOL LIST).
(4) Visitors may keep a maximum of 24 specimens each. The intent is that the specimens will be used for educational and not commercial purposes.
(5) The museum reserves the right to inspect each visitor's collection and to keep any specimens deemed important by the staff.

MISCELLANEOUS:
(1) No alcohol, firearms, illegal drugs, or pets are allowed anywhere on the premises.
(2) Smoking is not allowed in any of the buildings.,
(3) Participants provide their own bed linens and personal items.
(4) Coon Creek staff will clean the premises after the event, but we ask that participants help by picking up after themselves.

COLLECTING MATERIALS: To collect specimens you will need: a short heavy bladed knife; 2" paint brush; small shovel; aluminum foil to wrap specimens; and a box to pack specimens in for trip home.

PAYMENT AND DEADLINE OF FEES: All fees must be received by August 30, 1999.

REFUNDS; If you find that you need to cancel, a refund will be made ONLY if the space can be filled with another participant.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS FOR COON CREEK FOSSIL DIG:
(1) Friday, September 24, 1999: Arrive at Coon Creek mid-afternoon; settle in and have light dinner 6-9 p.m. Demonstration on how to collect and a description of the geology of the area.
(2) Saturday, September 25, 1999: (a) 7-8:30 a.m. Breakfast; (b) 9:30 a.m. move to the site and begin collecting. Part of the group will be able to tour the original creek site with a guide; (c) 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. lunch will be served. Return to the collecting site and continue collecting. The remainder of the group will be able to tour the original creek site with a guide; (d) 4:30 p.m. wind up collecting, pack material and return to camp to pack fossils for return home and shower for evening events; (e) 5:30 - 6:15 p.m. Continuing demonstration on how to clean and preserve fossils collected; (f) 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. dinner is served; (g) 9:00 - ?? Astronomy program with museum telescopes; (h) 9:00 p.m. - ?? continue rock swap and some other "stuff".
(3) Sunday, September 26, 1999: Breakfast from 7-8:30 a.m.; Say good bye and head for home.
