The United States Army sponsors a free, nation-wide program that can be used to engender interest in Earth Science. It is called eCyberMission, and makes Army scientists and engineers available to youngsters via the Internet.

eCyberMission is a web-based science fair program for 6th,7th,8th and 9th-graders.A team of three or four youngsters registers on-line with an adult advisor (typically a teacher), and executes a focused science fair project in one of four broad areas:

-Health and Safety

-Arts and Entertainment

-Sports and Recreation

-Environment

The team has access to Army scientists via e-mail, chat sessions, and threaded discussion groups. All participating scientists are volunteers, and have been vetted by the Army.

The team submits its completed science fair project on-line, and it is then subject to judging at the regional level by Army scientists.Regional prizes are $2,000 savings bonds per team member at each grade level. The top-ranking teams in each region get an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC for live judging at the national level.

Registration for this year’s eCyberMission competition begins September 15, 2003.It is open to public, private, parochial, and home-schooled children.Teams from youth groups (e.g., Boy Scouts) are also welcome compete.
