The Georgia Mineral Heritage Project is an ambitious attempt at preserving
knowledge of and representative specimens from mineral occurrences in the
state of Georgia. Daily each of us witnesses the destruction of our mineral
heritage. With each new strip mall, each new housing development, our environment
is changed. As the hills are bull dozed away and as the ground is built
upon and paved over, a page of our mineral history is lost to us. Why is
this mineral heritage important to you and to future generations? Think
of the important role that minerals have played in the history of the state.
Why do specific mineral species occur where they do and what do they say
about the surrounding geology? Just like you, The Georgia Mineral Heritage
Project seeks to answer these and similar questions. This project seeks
to document our mineral heritage, not just for one mineral species or for
a few collecting sites, but for as many minerals and mineral occurrences
as we can. Given the pace of development in Georgia, we believe we must
move quickly before this heritage is lost forever. If you would like to
join us in this effort or if you have ideas or suggestions concerning the
project, please contact us at the addresses given below:
