THE GEORGIA MINERAL HERITAGE PROJECT

"RESEARCH AND COLLECTING PROTOCOL
GUIDELINES:"

1. Select a site to investigate based on reported mineral occurrences or fresh exposures due to excavation or construction. Check the GMS website or project coordinator for a project number. Project numbers are assigned a county code and a sequential number. This allows easier access of the collected and archived data.

2. If necessary, obtain permission to collect from:

DNR    [   ]
Contractor    [   ]
Property owner  [   ]
3. Obtain topographic, geographic and geological maps of the collecting site.

4. Secure copies of collecting protocol, specimen labels and specimen bags from project coordinators.

5. Recommended safety equipment:

Hard Hat
Protective eyewear (Safety Glasses or Face Shield)
Leather or heavy canvas work gloves
Portable first-aid kit
Supply of drinking water plus wrapped energy snacks

6. Suggested collecting tools

Rock hammer     Hand lens
Crack hammer or small sledge hammer  measuring tape
One large and one small cold chisel  Map case
Gad or pry bar
Scraping tool
Small shovel and trowel
Specimen storage containers
Camera with color print or slide film
Clipboard to hold the collecting protocol sheets and notes
Small pouch to hold pencils and eraser.
Brunton or equivalent geological compass

7. At the site collect only what is necessary to document the mineral occurrence. It is NOT necessary to collect every possible specimen from the site.  Make sure to back fill all excavations and holes that you make and pack-out all your trash. You want to leave only footprints at the site.

8. Try to make all drawings and sketches as clear as possible. Make sure to cross reference specimen numbers with location information in your sketches and drawings.

9. Contact project coordinators to make arrangements for chemical or instrumental analysis of specimens.

10. After all data and specimens are collected, contact project coordinators for archiving of specimens and collected data.
