Program: Speaker John Trimble
Collecting, Managing & Protecting Your Specimens

Our guest speaker for May. John has a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Denison University in Ohio. He spent one year doing graduate work at Emory University until Uncle Sam thought his time would be better spent in Korea. John worked for 32 years with the Eastman Chemical Product Company, a
subsidiary of the Eastman Kodak Company.

John got into mineral collecting, sort of by accident. One day, while living in New York City, John thought it would be nice to take his 4 year old son to the wonderful American Museum of Natural History. Daddy Trimble bought Little Trimble a card with rocks on it from the museum gift shop. On the way home Little
Trimble asked his Daddy “What is this rock called? What is it used for? Why does this one have this shape? Why is it blue?”  Well, John didn’t know the answers, but vowed to find out. He bought several books on rocks and minerals and while he was doing the research for his son…he got hooked himself!
The Trimble’s moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and that’s where John  met Terry & Marie Huizing. Marie is the editor of Rocks & Minerals . They quickly became his mentors and the rest is history: John became an avid mineral collector.

If you’ve never been to John’s house, you’ve missed one of the finest mineral collections around. His specimens are to die for.  His eye for beauty and rarity is unsurpassed.  John will talk to us about collecting all sorts of things; not just minerals. He will discuss the different types of collecting: field
collecting, “green” collecting (where you pay green money for a specimen), swapping and trading. He’ll talk about proper labeling techniques, how to protect your collection from dust, air, moisture, and what to do with what you collect.

If you are just starting out in the wonderful world of collecting, or you’ve been at it for decades, you’ll surely come away with something new to think about. He may even bring some minerals from his private collection… but you must promise not to drool directly on them.

Program Chair
