Butte
4th
of July Butte and the Chimney Beds have been a favorite of rockhounds
for many years. Both locations are within a few miles of each
other down 14 miles of dirt road. Be
prepared to dig
because there is not much float to pick up.

![]() Unfortunately,
as was the case during many of our outings, the exact location of where
to look was kind of hit or miss. Unless you have the
GPS
locations or have been here many time, the landscape all looks pretty
much the same for miles. Of course, you really can't miss the
Butte which dominates the view to the southwest. Therefore,
we
didn't find much except for a few geodes lined with quartz crystals.
Bill Jaeger took his truck on an exploring trip on
another
trail into the 4th of July Butte area and found a few small agates with
beautiful fortifications. The cost of his trip was
the loss
of the whole right side window of this truck topper.
