with any birthday, anniversary, speaking
engagements
or other announcements of interest to our membership. If you
are
aware of any illness or hospitalizations of any members let me know so
that an announcement can be made in sunshine news. A friendly call from
a concerned club friend or a get well card may be just what the doctor
has ordered! |

Marcella was seen at the meeting so they must have untied
her from the hospital bed and set her free.
I know she likes that.
Amber Daniels has a second paper coming out and has gotten a

 Charles W. Hall
We have lost one of our most
precious possessions,
a friend. Charlie has moved on and will be missed by many of us in the
mineral world. His world as professor, coach, teacher and mineral
enthusiast
drew many of us into his life. As my friend, I saw him as the most
giving
person I have ever met. His ability to mix and accept people from all
walks
of life was unsurpassed. The memories he left will be subject for
conversation
for the duration of our lives. We go on but Charlie was one of a kind
and
will be sorely missed.
The year in micromounting: 2001 was a year of change - Through
the 'Scope Author: Wight, Quintin
Our second loss was that of Charlie Hall. Charlie, a southern gentleman to
the core, made his mark by showing up at every micromount symposium in North
America he could find and by handing out fiats of good, mounted specimens to
anyone who showed an interest. A World War II veteran (U.S. Navy), Charlie
completed his schooling after the war and then took up professional baseball. He
left that for a career as a sports coach, eventually becoming an associate
professor of physical education at Dekalb College in Georgia. Although his own
physical abilities were seriously reduced by the effects of diabetes, Charlie
would mount his specially equipped van and head off after thumbnails and
micromounts wherever they were to be found. He drove from Georgia to Canada and
California on his rounds each year, arriving always with a cheery greeting and a
vanful of handouts. Generosity was Charlie's finest trait. To help symposium
finances at auctions, he would bid high and often--I've even seen him outbid
someone for a really good specimen, then give it to the losing bidder. It is
fitting that he died at the conclusion of a micromount symposium. The
complications of diabetes and an infection were just too much for him.

Annual Northeast Meeting of the Micromounters of New England (MMNE)
at the Moose Lodge in Marlboro, Massachusetts.
The MMNE meeting signals the end of micromount gatherings and the
beginning of the collecting season in the Northeast, but in the West there is
one final fling: the annual meeting of the Northern California Mineralogical
Association (NCMA) in Pollock Pines. The 2002 meeting, 21-23 June, was dedicated
to the memory of Charlie Hall of Stone Mountain, Georgia. Charlie, who died
immediately after attending the meeting in 2001, was a long-time member and
supporter of NCMA and is sadly missed. |
